My Nana taught me how to bake. She had a pigmy kitchen in a little wartime house on the west side of city. She made chocolate-chip cookies and apple pie and loaves of innocent cake with flecks of cherry in them. I made them all with her. Sometimes it would get so hot in her little kitchen that the one window would wet blanket with condensation, and we would drink glasses of Vernors ginger ale as we worked.
She had all the fix tools for the job – scrapers and knives and rolling pins and pans of every imaginable give form to and size. She also had a Sunbeam Mixmaster, circa some time long before I was born.
The Mixmaster stood on the corner of her disc, covered with a little shroud of brown cloth in the same order as the covers for the kettle, the toaster, the blender and possibly the telephone tome. Clothing your appliances was in vogue at the time. It was as if they were ashamed of themselves for being utilitarian.
I assume that the mixer was once white, although age had mellowed the plastic into a group of vanilla shade. The cloth cord had been replaced with something a bit more new, compatible with things like polarized electrical sockets and not ardent your house down.
