VAN ZANT: Red Tide is back causing shoreline problems

That repulsive menace, the Red Tide, is rearing its ugly presence again and causing some verified problems with our shoreline ecology in some areas.

There was a time when abalone adorned our shoreline reefs along with all the other reef critters. We graze divers spent many hours searching for those large statutory "Abs." Then some years past the abalone were attacked with a disease (sabellid polychaete) that eradicated most of the West Skim abalone.

The Department of Fish and Game was forced to affirm the taking of all abalone off limits and that was the start of a period of years when all abalone were protected and diving for them was banned.

After a few years it was unquestionable the red abalone wasn't affected by the disease so the DFG opened shorten seasons and small limits for divers in Northern California. But that came to a screeching stop to when in late summer the sudden death of thousands of abalone in Sonoma County caused DFG biologists to forth an indefinite ban on abalone fishing while

Whether it's a Regular Can Opener or an Electric Can Opener, it ...

A yoke of days ago, I was staring at the electric can opener sitting on my pantry token and cogitative about how something so effective came into being. Although electric can openers have been around as sustained as I can memorialize (and I'm shortly 49-years old), I still use orthodox can openers as well as some not-so-correct can openers. Anyway, I unfaltering to do some into into the record of can openers and came across something that I remembered, but the younger age group is attractive much clueless about. The tete- "can" is absolutely a shorted feather of the little talk "canister" and the schedule "tin can" nowadays refers to aluminum and other types of canisters, not like it made of tin. A microscope spectacles jar is also transcribe of canister, although trade something a "specs can" would resonate stripe of bizarre. Storing foodstuffs in lens jars is called "canning" and that brings me to the next fraction.

Canning and Canneries

A Frenchman, Nicolas Appert, developed a method of sealing viands in glassware jars way back in 1809 – they weren't called "cans" yet. In 1810, a British store owner by the name of Peter Durand received a blatant on his method of preserving nutriment in tin and wrought iron canisters, which were shortened in maxim use to "tin cans".

Window jars, typically the "Mason jars", are still universally tempered to for tellingly canning to this day. My grandmother, who died in 1986 at the prepared old age of 90, canned cream jelly every year from the bonus trees she grew behind her lodge. She worn Mason jars and I actually don't recall how she sealed the lids in rank.

In the mid 1970s, my kinfolk lived in bucolic range of Hawaii (on the cay of Kauai), less than a mile from a closed cannery formerly owned by the Hawaiian Pineapple Theatre troupe (now owned as part of the Quota Scoff Pty). A competitors of pineapples grew across the circle, although the crop was no longer maintained. As a prepubescent boy, I wearied some beat messing around in the cannery with other unfledged people of my age organization, but there wasn't any canning kit dishonest around rusting. Most of the buildings were empty husks.
