GE Profile Self-Cleaning Gas Range: how do you get the burner grates clean?

The burner grates are very distressful, covered with light gray enamel -- that shows every bit of burned on gunk! Preposterous to clean even with steel wool & lots of elbow grease. The self-cleaning oven instructions say if the oven racks are gray porcelain-coated you can quit them in for the self-clean cycle -- but you're not supposed to put the porcelain-coated burner grates in to be self-cleaned. Has anybody tried it? What's the worst that could betide?
You can try the oven cleaner for self cleaning ovens on it. If that don't calling throw them in the oven and turn on the self clean, I surely don't think anything bad will happen.
