Can you use a smaller pot inside a large slow cooker?
Mar 22, 2007 by GC | Posted in Cooking & Recipes
We bought a immense slow cooker for dealing with the turkey carcass, but can I use it for a small meal by putting a smaller casserole dish favourable the the big one?
I *muse on* it would work, but would just take a longer time perhaps for the heat to reach the commons since the exterior of the inside pot wouldn't actually be touching the outer pot (except on the bottom side)... there would be no steer "conduction" of heat, only the heat generated by the air casing the pot.
Hmmm, never thought of this, but might be possible to surround your inner (aliment-filled) pot with (already warm-hot) water that came 1/2 or 2/3 the way up the privileged of the larger pot, then see if that would work for better conduction.
You'd still probably demand to check the temp of the innermost part of the food at intervals to see how it does compared to even-sided cooking in there.
You might also want to ask this question in a group that deals with slow-cookers (like for eg
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/slowcooker ),
or perhaps call the technological dept of a slower-cooker manufacturer to ask (though they may not be able to answer disinterestedly if they thought there could be any possibility you could do it wrong, etc., and sue them).
Another possibility is to fill up a lot of that unneeded extent in your larger crockpot with various other things.
You could of course add potatoes or something almost identical (to eat later maybe). But to avoid any other flavorings at all, you could also add things like wads of aluminum circumvent, pieces of ceramic plates, etc., or Pyrex, etc.... most should simply withstand the baking temp inside a crockpot.

Here are a few tips for slow-cooker celebrity from www.crock-pot.com and the Free Press Test Kitchen:
• Prep the approach the night before and store it in the slow cooker's ceramic insert only if the recipe doesn't have any raw chow or poultry; if it does, add those just before turning on the slow cooker.
• Never use the broadside over direct heat; it will break. Always make sure the tip-in is half-full, but no more than two-thirds full, to avoid spillovers once the liquids torridity up.
• Brown the meat before adding to the insert. This makes the provisions look better and sometimes taste better and also removes a lot of the fat.
• Don't purloin the lid. You lose at least 20 minutes of cooking time when you cancel the lid.
• Don't cook frozen meat or poultry in the slow cooker because it will not reach a unpolluted temperature in time to halt bacterial growth.
• Add unstable vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers and peas during the last 30 minutes or so of cooking. Cooking them longer could confirm them mushy.
Order garlic and celery in 5-qt slow cooker. Sprinkle chicken with marinated and speckle. In a chiefly nonstick skillet, brown chicken in oil in batches; change to slow cooker.
In a petite trundle, put together the residual ingredients. Rain cats over chicken. Extend over and cook on low for 3-1/2 to 4 hours or until chicken juices run remove.
Return: 6 servings.
