OPINION SHAPER: Discard the concept of disposables
31.12.69
I am not a big fan of expendable products. They are ecologically
unsound, wasteful and expensive. Why, then, do Americans have such
a sweet affair with paper plates, cups and plastic utensils?
In 2003, 58 percent of all homes in the Amalgamated States possessed
an automatic dishwasher, according to figures from the Affiliation for
Water Efficiency, For new home construction, the figure was 88
percent. And yet, tens of billions of pinchbeck utensils are disposed
of every year in the United States.
People use their dishwashers for the storage of plates and
glasses they don't use, and then securing and pitch paper plates
and plastic utensils. No one first likes to eat with plastic
utensils. But the horror of washing a dish has gotten out of speedily
in this country.
Recipes are promoted, not on the basis that the food you end up
with is engaging, but on the claim that you can prepare the meal
in one pot. With today's Teflon-lined pans, it takes less than two
minutes to undulate a pot, provided you don't wander off to watch "The
X Factor" and let the food become burnt into the pan. Isn't an
marvellous meal worth six minutes of pot washing?
